Automatic Driving Lessons in Galway

The Browne Roundabout, the Quincentennial Bridge, the Headford Road grind. Galway moves in pulses, and a clutch is one of the things that breaks the rhythm.

The Galway angle

Why learn automatic in Galway

Galway driving is a roundabout-and-bridge problem.

Galway is a city wrapped around water and a county that drives on country roads. The Salmon Weir Bridge backs up to Bohermore, Eyre Square pulls bus traffic in three directions, and the dual-carriageway from Loughrea spits commuters into the Browne Roundabout at peak. Most test routes use Carnmore, where the roads are straighter but the speed-limit changes catch people out. We run lessons on the actual examiner route, not the Salthill loop.

01

Carnmore route speed transitions

Galway's test centre at Carnmore uses roads that flip from 80 to 60 to 50 inside a couple of kilometres. Manual learners are second-guessing the gear at every change. An automatic just rolls through, leaving your head free for the speedo and the bend.

02

City roundabouts in series

Galway has seven roundabouts on the typical city loop. Browne, Quincentennial, Joyce, Western Distributor. Each asks for a clean entry and a quick read of priority. In a manual you are choosing first or second. In an automatic you are choosing the gap.

03

Connemara R-road bends

Spiddal and Furbo lessons take you onto coast-road bends that punish learners who slow with the clutch in. Engine braking in an automatic is smoother and quieter, and the car holds the line. That is one fewer thing the examiner can mark.

Carnmore routes run residential loops through Carnmore village, then out toward Athenry or back through Oranmore to the dual-carriageway approach. Speed limits change from 80 to 50 to 30 across a single route. Examiners use the dual-carriageway pickup for speed pickup.

I passed my driving test on the first attempt with Jonathan Martinez in an automatic, and I would strongly recommend him to anyone looking to build their confidence behind the wheel. As a nervous and inexperienced driver without my own car, I had tried lessons with other instructors and schools.but Jonathan and were by far the best fit. Their booking system was the easiest to use, and the lessons were structured, supportive, and tailored to my pace. It's clear that Jonathan genuinely cares about helping learners become safe, confident drivers.not just passing a test. His calm, encouraging approach made all the difference. My lessons were between Dublin 12, Tallaght, and finally in Dun Laoghaire.

I recently completed additional driving lessons with Derek Verso to boost my skills and confidence beyond the 12 EDT lessons, before my test (passed at first attempt - automatic). It was a truly positive experience. Derek was patient and really helpful in identifying areas for improvement. Scheduling was easy, and Derek was always reliable and communicative (thanks Derek!) Previously, I also completed my 12 EDT lessons at with John McCabe, which was equally positive. Would highly recommend both instructors!
