Automatic Driving Lessons in Dublin and Across Ireland
RSA School of Motoring delivers two-pedal lessons in the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, with RSA-approved instructors across all 26 counties.
There is no clutch. That is the whole idea.
Why automatic driving lessons
Automatic driving lessons lean on one hard truth: there is no clutch, so there is no stalling and no clutch-control panic on test day. That single change cascades through four outcomes we summarise as SAFER. EASIER. FASTER. CHEAPER.
Safer, because new drivers can put their full attention on mirrors, signals and road position from the very first lesson. Easier, because two pedals cut the cognitive load and many learners say they feel in control sooner. Faster, because pupils who do not have to master clutch control typically progress through the EDT units more quickly (per rsa.ie). Cheaper, because fewer re-takes and shorter learning timelines can lower the total cost of getting on the road. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details.
Wherever you are in Ireland
We cover all 26 counties of Ireland. The wider RSA School of Motoring network runs 184 locations across the country (per RSA School of Motoring), and the rsa-auto automatic vertical adds 96 dedicated Dublin neighbourhood pages under 4 Dublin Local Authorities, all feeding through the Dublin hub. Pick your county from the directory on this page, or head straight to the Dublin hub if you are learning in the capital. If your area is not on the directory, call us on 01 902 3100 and we will confirm pickup availability. How your lessons work
Here is how a typical course runs. You call us on 01 902 3100 or fill in the contact form. We match you with an EDT-certified Approved Driving Instructor who picks you up at home, at college or at work, depending on your covered area. Lessons happen in the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, a two-pedal hybrid, and each lesson is one hour long. Your instructor signs your EDT Learner Logbook at the end of every session (per rsa.ie), and we progress you through the 12 Essential Driver Training units in the order the Road Safety Authority expects. When you are test-ready, your instructor will say so, and we can add a pretest lesson with car hire for the test itself. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details.

Automatic lesson FAQs
Do I get a restricted licence if I pass in an automatic?
Yes. A Category B test passed in an automatic car produces a licence restricted to automatic transmissions only (per citizensinformation.ie). If you later want to drive a manual, you have to sit the test again in a manual car. Most of our learners are happy with the automatic-only entitlement because automatic and hybrid cars now dominate Irish new-car registrations (per SIMI).
What is EDT and how many lessons will I need?
Essential Driver Training is the RSA's mandatory 12-hour structured course for Category B learners (per rsa.ie). Twelve one-hour lessons is the minimum, not the ceiling. Many learners book the 12-lesson package because it matches the EDT requirement exactly; some take extra hours before sitting the test, which we arrange on request.
Do you cover my area?
We cover all 26 counties of Ireland through the wider RSA School of Motoring network of 184 locations (per RSA School of Motoring), plus 96 dedicated Dublin neighbourhood pages under this site. Start with the county directory on this page, or call 01 902 3100 to confirm pickup in your exact area.
What car do you use?
Every lesson runs in the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, our two-pedal automatic training fleet. It is the same car you will sit the test in if you choose our pretest with car hire option, which means no surprises on test day.
What does a Category B licence allow you to do?
A full Category B licence lets you drive cars and small vans up to 3,500 kg with up to eight passenger seats (per citizensinformation.ie). If you passed in an automatic, the entitlement is restricted to automatics until you sit a new test in a manual. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details.
Ready to start?
Ready when you are. Call 01 902 3100 to book your first automatic lesson, or use the contact form and we will call you back. If you are brand-new to driving, the 12-lesson package is the usual starting point because it lines up with the mandatory EDT programme. Lessons are typically available within one to two weeks of your booking call, subject to instructor capacity.
