The Kerry angle

Why learn automatic in Kerry

Kerry roads ask for confidence, not gear timing.

Kerry has two test centres at opposite ends of the county and routes that swing from busy town centres to wide-open N-road. Killarney has tourist coaches and bus-lane confusion most of the year. Tralee has the bypass, the railway crossing, and the Casement Park school run. The Ring of Kerry buses come in convoys. Most learners overthink the gear; the test is really about reading the gap.

01

Killarney town one-ways and coaches

Killarney's test routes use New Street, College Street and the Muckross Road. Tour coaches squeeze the lane and a manual learner is feathering the clutch at 5 km/h. Automatic just creeps. You are watching the cyclist, not the gear lever.

02

Tralee bypass and roundabouts

Tralee routes leave the centre via the Killarney Road roundabout and pick up the bypass. Examiners watch your merge speed. In a manual you pick the wrong gear and your speed is wrong with it. An automatic gets to dual-carriageway pace cleanly.

03

Ring of Kerry coach traffic

Kenmare, Sneem and Caherciveen lessons run the N70/N71 with summer coach traffic. Manual learners stall on the inclines behind a slow coach. An automatic rolls forward at coach pace without thinking about it.

Killarney

Killarney Town, Killarney, Co. Kerry

Towns served: Killarney, Killorglin, Kenmare, Castleisland, Rathmore, Milltown

Routes leave Killarney via New Street and the Muckross Road into the National Park approach, or out the N72 toward Killorglin. Tour coaches and Kenmare bus traffic squeeze the lanes. Examiners use the New Street one-way and the College Street pinch.

Tralee

Tralee Town, Tralee, Co. Kerry

Towns served: Tralee, Listowel, Killorglin, Castleisland, Ardfert, Ballyheigue

I passed my driving test on the first attempt with Jonathan Martinez in an automatic, and I would strongly recommend him to anyone looking to build their confidence behind the wheel. As a nervous and inexperienced driver without my own car, I had tried lessons with other instructors and schools.but Jonathan and were by far the best fit. Their booking system was the easiest to use, and the lessons were structured, supportive, and tailored to my pace. It's clear that Jonathan genuinely cares about helping learners become safe, confident drivers.not just passing a test. His calm, encouraging approach made all the difference. My lessons were between Dublin 12, Tallaght, and finally in Dun Laoghaire.

I recently completed additional driving lessons with Derek Verso to boost my skills and confidence beyond the 12 EDT lessons, before my test (passed at first attempt - automatic). It was a truly positive experience. Derek was patient and really helpful in identifying areas for improvement. Scheduling was easy, and Derek was always reliable and communicative (thanks Derek!) Previously, I also completed my 12 EDT lessons at with John McCabe, which was equally positive. Would highly recommend both instructors!
