The EDT: Essential Driver Training in Ireland
What the EDT is
Essential Driver Training is the mandatory 12-hour lesson programme new Category B learners have to complete before they sit the RSA driving test. The Road Safety Authority introduced EDT in April 2011 for new Category B learners (per rsa.ie) and later extended it to other licence categories. It is structured around 12 one-hour lessons delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor, and each session is logged in the EDT Learner Logbook and signed off at the end of the lesson (per rsa.ie). You cannot sit the Category B test until the 12 EDT lessons are complete. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details. Pickup is built into the lesson price, so there is no separate travel fee on top of the lesson itself. Block packages are the most cost-effective way to cover the full EDT programme in one booking.
Eligibility and prerequisites
The basics first: you have to be at least 17 years old for a Category B learner permit (per citizensinformation.ie), and you have to sit and pass the Driver Theory Test before you can apply for the permit (per rsa.ie). Your first learner permit is valid for two years, and you can sit the practical driving test once you have held it for six months and completed your EDT lessons (per citizensinformation.ie). You also need someone with a full Category B licence held for at least two years to supervise any practice time outside paid lessons (per rsa.ie). If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details. Pickup is built into the lesson price, so there is no separate travel fee on top of the lesson itself.
How the process works
Here is how completing the 12-hour EDT programme fits together in plain steps.
- EDT stands for Essential Driver Training. It is the mandatory structured 12-hour lesson programme for new Category B learner drivers in Ireland. (T2, rsa.ie EDT programme).
- EDT was introduced by the Road Safety Authority in April 2011 for new learner drivers in Category B (cars) and was extended to other categories in later years. (T2, rsa.ie EDT programme history).
- EDT consists of a minimum of 12 one-hour lessons with a Road Safety Authority Approved Driving Instructor. (T2, rsa.ie EDT programme).
- The 12 EDT lessons are structured around specific driving skills covered in sequence, with an EDT Learner Logbook tracking each session and signed off by the ADI. (T2, rsa.ie EDT Learner Logbook).
- Only an ADI whose name appears on the RSA Approved Driving Instructor register may deliver EDT lessons. (T2, rsa.ie Approved Driving Instructor register).
- The EDT Learner Logbook includes a Sponsor Driver section where a nominated experienced driver records practice time outside paid lessons, reinforcing each EDT skill between sessions. (T2, rsa.ie EDT Learner Logbook).
- A learner may begin EDT only after the learner permit has been issued. (T2, rsa.ie EDT programme).
- A learner cannot sit the Category B driving test until the EDT 12-hour course has been completed and the logbook is signed off. (T2, rsa.ie Driving test eligibility).
Your Approved Driving Instructor guides you through the sequence in the order the Road Safety Authority expects (per rsa.ie), and signs off each session in your EDT Learner Logbook at the end of the lesson.
Fees and timeline
Fees change periodically and we cite the current figures rather than print numbers that may be out of date. The learner permit application fee is set by the NDLS (per rsa.ie). The Driver Theory Test fee is set by the theory test provider (per theorytest.ie). The Category B driving test fee is set and published by the Road Safety Authority (per rsa.ie). Timeline-wise, a typical learner holds their permit for a minimum of six months before the test and completes the 12 EDT lessons inside that window, though many learners take longer to feel test-ready. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details.
What the EDT looks like in an automatic car
If you train and sit the test in an automatic car, the licence you earn is restricted to automatic transmissions only (per citizensinformation.ie). That restriction covers every step on this page: the permit application, the EDT lessons, the pretest and the test itself. We run every rsa-auto lesson in a Toyota Yaris Hybrid with a two-pedal layout, and the pretest with car hire option means you sit the RSA test in the same car you trained in. If you later want to drive a manual, you have to take a new test in a manual car. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details.
Common mistakes and tips
A few things save learners a lot of anxiety. First, treat Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre as a single reflex, not three separate steps; test examiners watch for the sequence. Second, observations at junctions are the single most common fault category (per rsa.ie) and they are cheap to fix with deliberate head movement. Third, roundabout procedure is about lane choice on approach, not about speed at the circle. And finally, the EDT 12 hours is a minimum, not a ceiling: add pretest lessons if you are not yet test-ready. If you have any questions before booking, call 01 902 3100 and the team will walk you through the details. Pickup is built into the lesson price, so there is no separate travel fee on top of the lesson itself.
FAQs
Can I train in an automatic and sit the test in a manual?
No. You sit the Category B test in whatever car you present, and if that car is an automatic then your licence is restricted to automatics (per citizensinformation.ie). If you want an unrestricted manual entitlement, you have to train and sit the test in a manual car, and if you already passed in an automatic, you have to take a new test in a manual.
How long does the EDT take?
Essential Driver Training is a minimum of 12 one-hour lessons with an ADI (per rsa.ie). Most learners spread those 12 lessons across two or three months. You cannot sit the driving test until all 12 EDT lessons are logged and signed off by your instructor in the EDT Learner Logbook.
How much does it cost end to end?
The cost depends on how many lessons beyond the 12 EDT minimum you take, plus the RSA theory test fee, the learner permit fee and the driving test fee (all per rsa.ie). Our 12-lesson automatic package is 659.24 EUR at 54.94 EUR per lesson, which is the EDT minimum in our automatic car. See pricing for the full ladder.
What happens if I fail the first test?
You can reapply for another test slot through the RSA and sit it again (per rsa.ie). Most learners who fail on a first attempt go back for a few focused lessons with their ADI to fix the specific faults the tester flagged, then retake the test.
Do I need to keep my instructor for the pretest?
It helps a lot. The pretest lesson is designed to rehearse the route and the exact manoeuvres your RSA test centre uses, and your regular ADI already knows your weak points. The pretest with car hire bundles both the lesson and the test car rental, so the car on test day is the same Toyota Yaris Hybrid you trained in.
