Why automatic in Fingal

Fingal is everything north of the Tolka. Swords and Malahide near the coast, Blanchardstown and Castleknock in the middle, and a run of seaside towns up to Balbriggan. Dublin Airport sits in the middle of it. Outside the commuter belt, Fingal goes country fast: Lusk, Rush, Oldtown. Learners are not permitted on motorways, but they still need to handle the N-roads and dual-carriageway approaches that carry the same traffic character.

The N2 and N3 dual-carriageway runs

Learners are not permitted on motorways on a provisional, but the Fingal route character is set by the N-roads feeding into them. The N2 through Finglas, the N3 toward Clonee, and the Swords Road approach run at 80 to 100 km/h with merges and lane drops. In an automatic the transmission picks the gear for the pickup, so you are watching the gap instead of the rev needle.

Speed-ramp-to-60 cycles in Damastown

The Mulhuddart test route threads through Damastown and Tyrrelstown. You move from a 60 km/h stretch to a 30 km/h school zone to a ramped 20 km/h residential in thirty seconds. An automatic holds the speed and changes the cog, so your attention stays on the signs and the speedo instead of the left foot. Instructors say speed-limit compliance is the single biggest fault source on this route.

Airport approach and R132 traffic

Swords Road (R132) and the Old Airport Road have their own traffic logic. Taxis and commercial vehicles move fast, change lanes late, and stop without warning. An automatic lets you keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on their indicators.

RSA test centres in Fingal

Two RSA test centres sit inside Fingal: Mulhuddart (Damastown) and Mulhuddart (Maple House) near Ballycoolin. Many Blanchardstown, Castleknock and Mulhuddart learners also test at Finglas just across the LA boundary in Dublin City Council.

Mulhuddart (Damastown)

Old Navan Road, Damastown, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, D15 XHP3

Mixed bag: industrial park loops around Damastown, residential runs through Tyrrelstown and Castaheany, and a few faster stretches on the Old Navan Road. Lots of speed ramps and changing speed limits across a single route.

The RSA doesn't break Damastown out in its published summaries. The nearby Maple House centre ran at 46.3% in H1 2024 and the route character is similar, so that is a fair reference point.

Maple House

Unit 3A, Maple House, Rosemount Business Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 11, D11 RPE8

46.3% H1 2024

We run Maple House prep from our Finglas lessons. Big roundabouts at Ballycoolin and Jamestown, residential reversing in the business park, school-run traffic around Scoil Eoin on Coolmine Road. Routes rotate, but the character is consistent.

FAQs for Fingal learners

If you test in an automatic, your Irish driving licence is valid for automatic cars only. It is a full Irish licence and all insurers in Ireland accept it. Most new cars on sale today are automatic, so this stops being a limit pretty quickly.

Ring us on 01 902 3100 or use the contact form. We confirm the slot the same day, match you to an instructor near you, and send directions for your pickup point.

We cover all of Fingal. Lessons in Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk and Donabate run the same as the Dublin 15 lessons, same price, same car, door-to-door pickup. The lesson route starts from your door.

No. A provisional licence does not cover motorways and we never run a learner lesson on one. Fingal test routes use N-roads, dual carriageways, town bypasses and estate streets, all of which a provisional licence allows. After you pass your test we can arrange a one-off post-licence lesson on a motorway so the first time you drive one is alongside an instructor.

You can book either. Finglas is across the boundary in Dublin City Council but is the closest centre for a lot of the Blanchardstown area. We prep for both route styles.
